The most popular
business model that has emerged is where the solar company is responsible
for marketing and technical support, while a separate institution
handles consumer financing. Solar companies and micro credit providers
enter into an agreement or memorandum of understanding that govern
their working relationship on aspects such as service arrangements,
repossession of systems, buy-back in the event of grid extension etc.
Solar companies participating in the RERED Project compete with each
other and are required to:
Sell
only products that satisfy defined technical specifications
Provide defined warranty
arrangements
Have adequate rural outreach to provide
after sales service
Are responsive to customer complaints
Micro credit providers design the consumer loan package for end users,
which include an initial down payment followed by monthly payments,
usually spread over two to four years. While not all PCIs provide
consumer financing for SHS, there are some institutions such as finance
companies operating outside the RERED Project that provide credit
using their own resources. Credit providers screen applicants, execute
loan agreements and pay the solar company for SHS installed.
