Currently, Sri Lanka has little practical experience in this sector, and the off-grid village hydro electrification model will be attempted initially for community based biomass projects At the end of the RERED Project in December 2007, the AU has received four proposals for establishing off-grid biomass electrification projects. With the mature status of the village hydro sector, it is expected that some of the village hydro developers would move into the biomass sector. Therefore, there is a bright outlook for this segment in the years to come.
Grant Schemes Available
In addition to a project preparation grant of up to US$8,000 paid on the achievement of defined milestones for each project, the Developer receives an incentive payment of up to US$1,000 for demonstrated success in achieving agreed economic benefit targets.
The Electricity Consumer Society receives a co-financing grant of US$600 per kW of installed capacity of the plant, after successful commissioning of the scheme in accordance with the RERED Project technical specifications.
